Idle problem solving

Monday, October 27th, 2008

I have this habit problem thing where I solve programming problems while my brain is completely idle or not thinking about the problem (that I know of), and I have even done this in my sleep.  I have (apparently) woken up, texted myself the correct solution (with correct syntax, logic, etc) to some problem I couldn’t figure out while I was madly trying to work out a solution.  And yes, it worked.  It’s sort of neat, but I wonder how much this burns my unconscious brain time.  Is this bad, unhealthy?  I don’t even realize that it must be churning over these things,.  Interesting.

The only thing I had to fix was create a blank constructor for my date class:

Date::Date(){}

I figured this out while I was walking out of class to the Students Center.  It’s useful, anyway, whatever it is.

Fall is here

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Fall is here in Superior and it’s brought the frigid weather.  Weather.com for this evening says:

Cloudy with rain and snow showers this evening. A snow shower or two overnight - otherwise, mostly cloudy and windy. Low around 30F. Winds WNW at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of precip 40%.

Unrelated:

I’ve been following the election (somewhat close) and I have my decision who I am going to vote for.

Completely unrelated, ahem, are some comments that Sarah Palin said regarding government funded programs:

Where does a lot of that earmark money end up anyway? […] You’ve heard about some of these pet projects they really don’t make a whole lot of sense and sometimes these dollars go to projects that have little or nothing to do with the public good. Things like fruit fly research in Paris, France. I kid you not.

Let’s nevermind the fact that fruit fly research has lead to advances in understanding autism.  Speaking of the Scientific Community, I won’t even mention McCain’s comment during the first presidential debate regarding the Adler Planetarium.

“While we were working to eliminate these pork barrel earmarks he (Senator Obama) voted for nearly $1 billion in pork barrel earmark projects. Including $3 million for an overhead projector at a planetarium in Chicago, Illinois. My friends, do we need to spend that kind of money?”

That’s okay, scientific research on fruit flies and studying astronomy can’t help us to pave the way for cleaner energy or anything like that.
